What Are the Early Signs of Cataracts?

What Are the Early Signs of Cataracts?

The American Academy of Ophthalmology and other major ophthalmology organizations have designated June as Cataract Awareness Month. As trusted Miami cataracts surgeons, our team at Laser Eye Center of Miami wants to do our part by spreading awareness about cataracts and their effects on vision. We believe that when cataracts are detected early, we have a better chance of successfully treating them and restoring clear vision.

Below, we reveal some of the early signs of cataracts.

Typical Cataract Symptoms

A cataract is a clouding of the lens that normally occurs due to advancing age. A young, healthy lens is clear and flexible, which allows it to focus images onto the retina. But starting around the age of 40, the lens begins to yellow and harden. Cataracts start small but gradually worsen; their effects on vision become more noticeable and debilitating over time as they mature. Eventually, an untreated cataract can cause significant vision loss and even blindness.

Symptoms of early cataracts include the following:

  • Blurry or clouded vision (like looking out of a cloudy or streaked window)
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Glare from the sun or lights
  • Poor night vision
  • Colors that look dull or faded
  • Frequently changing glasses prescription

Can Cataracts Be Prevented?

Although there is no guaranteed way to completely prevent cataracts, some studies have shown that certain healthy lifestyle habits may help stave off cataracts or slow their progression. Our doctors recommend not smoking and drinking alcohol only in moderation. We also believe you should eat a healthy diet, with plenty of vitamins and antioxidants, and protect your eyes from ultraviolet exposure. Wear glasses with 100 percent UV protection whenever going outside — and add a brimmed hat for extra protection.

Regular eye examinations are also crucial to the health of your eyes and your visual acuity. During these exams, we can provide you with more tips to keep your eyes healthy and your vision clear. Or, if you have already been diagnosed with cataracts, we can keep a close eye on them and track their progression. We can discuss your cataract surgery options if we believe your cataracts require it.
