Joseph Kurstin, MD

Joseph Kurstin, MD, president of the Laser Eye Center of Miami, is a highly experienced Miami LASIK and Cataract Surgeon. He is a board-certified ophthalmologist and VISX S4 CustomVue and Intralase certified LASIK surgeon. Dr. Kurstin is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and International Society of Refractive Surgery. He has been in practice in Miami since 1968 and brings a unique blend of personalized care, eye care and medicine to his family of patients. His long-standing presence and reputation in the Miami area as both citizen and surgeon has given him an in-depth knowledge of the community he is privileged to serve. Dr. Kurstin received his Bachelor's of Science in Pharmacy from the St. Louis College of Pharmacy. After serving in the U.S. Army in the Korean War he returned to the University of Miami Medical School for his Medical Degree. He was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and received numerous other honors. He went to Moffitt Hospital, University of California in San Francisco for his medical internship and then returned to Bascom Palmer Eye Institute where he finished his ophthalmology residency as chief resident.

 

Nelson Preschel, MD

Nelson Preschel, MD is a skilled ophthalmic surgeon with fellowship training in cornea and glaucoma, Dr. Preschel’s practice is focused on refractive and cataract surgery, as well as the medical and surgical treatment of corneal, external eye diseases and glaucoma. He is certified for the use of VISX S4 CustomVue and Intralase lasers.

Dr. Preschel was born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela and is fluent in Spanish and English. He received his Medical degree from the Central University of Venezuela and was awarded an educational grant from Venezuela’s Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho Foundation in order to pursue post-graduate specialty training in the United States.     

Being a native Latin American with European ancestry, Dr. Preschel has a distinctive educational and cultural background. He served his Internal Medicine internship at The Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City. While living in New York, he completed a research fellowship in Ophthalmic Pathology, followed by his Ophthalmology residency at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. In addition, Dr. Preschel achieved sub-specialty fellowship training in Cornea, Refractive Surgery and Glaucoma at the Phillips Eye Institute in Minneapolis, under the mentorship of an internationally renowned team of specialists at Minnesota Eye Consultants. After completing his training in the US, Dr. Preschel returned to Venezuela in 1998 to work as an attending surgeon at the training program of the Venezuelan Society for the Advancement of Ophthalmology, where he was actively involved in the post-graduate training of residents and fellow ophthalmologists.

Dr. Preschel is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a member of various ophthalmic societies. He has authored several publications and lectures in the fields of Cornea, Refractive Surgery and Glaucoma.

Abraham Awad, OD

Abraham Awad, OD, Director of Optometric Services at the Laser Eye Center of Miami has extensive experience in LASIK surgery and other refractive procedures. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, VA. Dr. Awad worked several years at the prestigious King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital in Saudi Arabia. Then, he attended Southeastern University College of Optometry where he received his Doctorate of Optometry degree. In 1992 Dr. Awad was awarded The Bausch & Lomb Contact Lens Award. In 1993 he was awarded The Alcon Contact Lens Award and The Wesley-Jessen Contact Lens Clinical Practice Award. Dr. Awad is a member of the Beta Sigma Kappa honor society and The American Academy of Optometry.
